Reverse Pacemaker

Health, Invention, TechTom WalmaComment

Idea: An implantable medical device that detects when your heart stops, alerts a hospital, and then, instead of restarting your heart like a defibrillator/pacemaker, creates a cooling reaction in a cooling pad inside your body to cool nearby blood, and then the cooled blood is pumped through the body. This cooling slows cell death and gives you a few hours to be revived (like people who've drowned in Arctic ice water and then were revived a few hours later)

Daily Affirmation Mirror

Tech, SillinessSteve HansenComment

Idea: A daily affirmation mirror, which, when you look at yourself, makes you feel better about your disappointing appearance by saying "it's not your fault" (because hearing someone else say it is more convincing than just saying it to yourself). Also discussed: hacking the mirror to play mind games on a spouse, massage devices as "plausible deniability adult toys"

Brain Altering Helmet TV Show

TV Show, Tech, Futuristic, EvilTom WalmaComment

Idea: A TV show where people wear a brain altering helmet (as covered on the Radiolab episode "Nine-Volt Nirvana") which can temporarily induce terror, relaxation, enhanced learning ability, disabled morality, etc. Then, they'd be put in a scenario, such as putting someone in a haunted house and modifying their brain to induce terror, or testing a religious person by putting them in a stressful situation and shutting off their sense of morality, just to see what will happen

Body Enhancement

Body Augmentation, Futuristic, TechPaul PipitoneComment

Idea (NSFW): To use robotic prosthetics and other human enhancements to be better at sports, look good, have fun, and live longer. Also discussed: robotic genitals, cutting off your feet because your shoes always stink, how body enhancement tech will mean that you'll never have to give up on stupid dreams

"Honky" Custom Car Horn Sound Device

Invention, Tech, CarsTed MossComment

Idea: A device (the "honky") that makes different car horn sounds to communicate different things, like "look out", "excuse me", "screw you", or "my bad". Also, maybe configurable text on the front/rear or your car that says "move over"

Replacement Body / Replacement Brain

Futuristic, SciFi, Tech, HealthTom WalmaComment

Idea: In the 1950s, a Russian scientist was able to attach a dog's head onto another dog's body, and it survived for a few weeks. We should be able to do much better now. So if a person is terminally ill, we should attach their brain/head to a machine (i.e. replacement body) to get maybe a few months of extra life, and attach the body to a machine (i.e. replacement brain). The head/brain can live a little longer and have fun in virtual reality games, and the body can be used for medical testing, without worrying about causing suffering. Over time, as the technology gets better, the head can live longer and longer, to the point where maybe everyone who is old and/or has minor health problems will choose to do it, even if not terminally ill

Future Car

Business Idea, Environmentalism, Futuristic, Invention, Tech, CarsTom WalmaComment

Idea: A single-person electric car/vehicle that's skinny enough to drive through a door into a house or building (so you no longer need a garage, and you can go fast down hallways at work). It can orient itself both horizontally like a motorcycle and vertically like a Segway, and travel up and down elevator shafts instead of using elevators.

Also, the privacy of having your own transportation vehicle is important, because at least one day of your life you'll probably shart your pants, and you don't want to prolong your humiliation by taking public transportation back to your house

Smart Shock Collars for Cats (To Save Birds)

Animal Rights / Vegan, Futuristic, Pets, TechTom WalmaComment

Idea: Shock collars which shock cats when they're attacking birds, to keep pet cats from killing so many birds that the birds go extinct. The shock collars would use cameras and artificial intelligence to figure out when the cat is attacking a bird. The cameras could also provide fun cat-view video footage. The shock collars could also shock a mountain lion if it's eating the pet cat, to deter the mountain lion from killing and eating future cats

Post-COVID Garage Cities

Environmentalism, Futuristic, Tech, App, Business Idea, HealthTom WalmaComment

Idea: An electric car charging station consisting of dozens of 2-stall garages, where each car is charged indoors in privacy in it's own 2-stall garage. The car being charged is in one side of a garage, and "something to do" for around 40 minutes is in the other side of the garage. Examples of "stuff to do" include private movie theaters, barbers, dentists, Redbox movie rental machines, restaurant tables, hot tubs, etc. The "things to do" could be wheeled in on demand and ordered using a phone app. These 2-stall garage facilities could basically replace entire cities, and could slow down the transmission of the Coronavirus because they reduce or eliminate person-to-person contact, and they can be modified to implement virus protection measures more easily than normal stores/businesses (for example, an airproof plastic sheet could be placed between the customer's side of the garage and the business/service side of the garage). They could also help small businesses financially survive the Coronavirus because these businesses would no longer need a storefront or fixed location building which would require them to pay rent every month. Also, they could be a place for you to watch a sad movie where other people can't see you cry

Bathroom Cleanliness Invention Ideas

Invention, TechTom WalmaComment

Two ideas to help make public restrooms cleaner: 1) A camera inside a bathroom stall door which is mechanically connected to the door lock. It would slide completely inside the door (so it can't see anything) when the door is locked, and align with a hole in the door to view the stall when the door is unlocked, so it can see who made a mess in the stall as they leave the stall, and 2) half-globe-shaped devices which fold down over the two halves of a horseshoe-shaped toilet seat when the toilet seat is up (kind of like those half-globe things in hair salons that fold down over people's heads). The half-globe devices would clean the toilet seat by spraying it with water and then drying it off with an air blower

Privatized Roads

Futuristic, Tech, CarsMark SweetmanComment

Idea/prediction: If a company like Tesla or Uber owns all of the cars instead of people owning cars, they will have a financial incentive to own the roads and keep the roads in good shape, because they would have to pay for damage to their massive fleet of cars due to potholes, etc. Also, they could remove "redundant roads" to save costs, because if it takes longer to deliver stuff to a place because the road on the most direct route no longer exists, that extra time doesn't cost much if the cars are all electric and self-driving

Modular Airplanes and Airplane Boarding Speedup Ideas

Futuristic, Robots, TechTom WalmaComment

Ideas to speed up airplane boarding, including:
* Robots to lift bags straight up/down into the overhead bins of an airplane, so people don't stand in the aisle and block the line of other people who are boarding while they try to shove their bags into the overhead bins
* A modular airplane, where the top half (cockpit and cabin) can be removed, and i) replace the waiting area of the airport to eliminate the need for "boarding", and ii) when the plane lands and slams on it's brakes, slide off the front of the plane, land on wheels, and drive away (like a bus) onto the highway without slowing down
* Use high-tech transportation like modular airplanes and drones to create a more diverse transportation system, instead of repairing old roads and bridges

Moral Selection

Animal Rights / Vegan, Environmentalism, Futuristic, Politics and Social Issue, SciFi, TechTom WalmaComment

Idea: Environmental activism/engineering, where instead of trying to return nature to an arbitrary past before humans arrived, we use genetic engineering, technology, etc. to engineer the environment and the DNA of animals to make them experience more pleasure and less fear and suffering ("moral selection" as opposed to "natural selection" aka Darwinism). It's a way for humans to become "the best thing that ever happened to the universe". And it's the best option for finding meaning in life, because it's such a big task that it won't be solved/automated in many lifetimes, leaving everybody with nothing to do with the rest of their lives. Also, there are plenty of tasks for everybody (even dumb people) to do, like saving animals from freezing to death, gathering DNA samples of animals, etc.

Glasses That Make Cats Look Like Dogs

Clothing, Futuristic, Pets, Silliness, TechDiego AttanasioComment

Idea: "Augmented reality" glasses that make dogs look like cats, or vice versa. Also maybe headphones, so the person who sees the cat as a dog can say a dog's name, and other people (and the cat) hear them say the cat's name. This technology would also allow everyone to live a lie, causing other people to see and hear them in a way that isn't real

Life Guide App

Idea: An app that monitors what you're doing all day and uses artificial intelligence to give you advice, kind of like "an angel on your shoulder that also keeps you from being stupid".
